Homecoming went off without a hitch for the Boyd Christian High School Lady Broncos on Saturday night as they roped in a 51-20 victory over Covenant Academy.
“It was a good win for us. We played well and I was proud the girls did not let up,” said Boyd head coach Brent Warren. “I thought we did a good job of not letting them take us out of our game plan. We played as a team and did what we were supposed to do.”
Jumping off to a 27-8 halftime lead, the Lady Bronco offense was able to generate turnovers, grab rebounds and generally create a lot of their own shots. Quarterbacked by point guard Rhiannon Hoover Boyd Christian’s pair of dynamic shooters Mackinzie Pistole and Morgan DeWeese generated a combined 24 points for the Lady Broncos, 12 points apiece.
Covenant’s Naina Patel and Madisen Madewell were not far off, with a combined 16 points. They might not have conquered but they divided equally with 8 points apiece.
The Lady Broncos were able to distribute the basketball more effectively and take advantage of the turnover opportunities, playing tough all four quarters.
The Lady Lions best offense came in the third quarter when they outscored Boyd, 10-9. The Lady Broncos followed that with 15 points in the fourth and Covenant only garnered a bucket from Patel in fourth-quarter action.
“Covenant plays scrappy and always gives us a good game,” Warren said. “The past two years they have played us very close. The win was a turn in the right direction for us. We have had a rough start. But I think we are finally coming together as a team.”
Also scoring for Boyd Christian School were Stephanie Mullins with 8 points, Alaina Stiles 6, Rhiannon Hoover and Erin Cantrell both scored 5 points and Erica Cantrell was good for one trey.
Rounding out Covenant’s scoring were Hannah Griffin with 3 points and Chloe Hillis made 1 point.
The Lady Broncos go on the road Friday, Dec. 16, and Saturday, Dec. 17 to Bell Buckle to play in the Webb Classic. Their next home game will be Tuesday, Jan. 3 when the play host to Riverside Christian Academy. Game time is 6 p.m.
