Morgan Deweese draws a double team in the post for much of the game against an aggressive Lady Bulldog defense.

Christmas did not come early for the Boyd Christian Lady Broncos. The Lady Broncos went cold against the Lady Bulldogs from Red Boiling Springs and Boyd found out firsthand the Lady Bulldogs’ bite was much worse than their bark.
Boyd got off to a rocky start and from there it only got worse. Poor shooting led to breakdowns on offense and defense. Boyd was defeated by Red Boiling Springs, 52-22, Monday night at the DeKalb County Christmas Tournament in Smithville.
Lady Bulldog Cayley Tuck led all scorers with a game-high 19 points. Lady Bronco Erin Cantrell led Boyd with eight.
The Lady Bulldogs were off to the races from the opening tip. It took all of about four minutes for the Lady Bulldogs to knock down back-to-back 3-pointers by Maggie Isenberg and Shaylie Ellingson. Combined with a basket underneath by Red Boiling Springs, it prompted Lady Bronco head coach Brent Warren to call timeout. Boyd trailed 8-2.
Out of the timeout, Morgan Deweese got the ball inside and she went on the attack. She turned the corner on the Lady Bulldog defense and went hard to the rim for her first two points.
Red Boiling Springs responded with its third 3-pointer and took an 11-4 lead.
The Lady Bronco defense stepped up its intensity and forced the Lady Bulldogs into turnovers. The turnovers allowed Boyd to climb back into the game and cut the lead to three at 12-9. Cantrell was left alone past the 3-point line and she fired and hit her first of three from beyond the arch. The first quarter came to a close and Boyd trailed 12-9.
By the second quarter, the Lady Bulldogs were settled in and the offense found its rhythm. The Red Boiling Springs defense created havoc on the Boyd offense and the Lady Bulldogs extended their defense almost to midcourt.
Cayley Tuck took over for the Lady Bulldogs and the Lady Broncos had no answer. She shot from outside and drove the lanes and when the Boyd defense was late to react she went to the free-throw line. Tuck was 3-for-3 from the charity stripe. Ellingson connected on her second 3-point basket before the half and the Lady Bulldog offense exploded for a 17 point second quarter.
It didn’t go quite as well for the Lady Broncos in the second quarter and they were on defense much of the time. The few times on offense for Boyd put Stephanie Mullins on the free-throw line. Mullins attacked the ferocious Lady Bulldog defense and drew the whistle on her way to the basket. Mullins shot 3-of-4 before the half.
With the defense focused on Rhiannon Hoover, it was Cantrell again who slipped outside. She pulled the trigger on her second 3-pointer and hit her mark. Emma Rhoton hit her only two points of the game in the second quarter. At the half, Boyd trailed 29-17.
The Red Boiling Springs defensive effort in the third was intense and the Lady Bronco offense was flat-footed. Boyd watched and waited for something to happen as time ticked off the clock.
A screen was set for Hoover and she shook off her defender long enough to get her first clear look at the basket. Her first 3-pointer came in the middle of the third period. Cantrell added her final basket against a relentless Lady Bulldog defense.
Cayley Tuck led the Lady Bulldog offense for the second straight quarter. She added eight more points along with a barrage of outside shooting from her teammates. Abby Tuck knocked down a pair of deep 3-point shots and Hannah Smith launched one of her own that was right on target against a slow to react Lady Bronco defense. By the end of the third quarter Red Boiling Springs led 50-22.
The damage was done and both teams emptied their benches. Tamra Murphy for the Lady Bulldogs put the exclamation point on the game as time expired. The Lady Broncos were held scoreless in the fourth quarter and could only watch as time expired. The Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Broncos, 52-22.
