Holt announces WCHS golf teams

Rising sophomore Chase Newby figures to play a major role for the Pioneer golf team this year.

If any sport can be played during this time of social distancing, logic would suggest that sport is golf.

“The golf course is outdoors and it’s pretty big so you can keep your distance,” said Warren County High School golf coach J.W. Holt.

Coach Holt held tryouts Monday and has announced the WCHS boys and girls teams.

For the Pioneers, Colton Krech is the team’s lone senior and he is expected to be the anchor. He will be joined by returning sophomores Chase Newby, Sawyer Seymour, Alec Johnson and Isaac Cantrell.

The Pioneers also have new sophomores on the team in Jax King, Becham Scott and Chase Boley. Aiden Miller is the lone freshman.

Five players participate in each boys match with the top four scores counting toward the team score. With Krech expected to be the No. 1 player, coach Holt is looking for other players to step up.

“Chase Newby and Sawyer Seymour have been playing quite a few events so I have high expectations for those guys because of how much they’ve been playing,” said Holt. “We’ll have to see about a No. 4 and No. 5.”

The WCHS girls program will have golfers for the first time in two years. Valeria Vargas, now playing college golf at Trevecca, was the last Lady Pioneer golfer.

Her sister, Lauren Slatton, will continue the family golfing tradition. Slatton and Allison Blaylock have made the Lady Pioneer golf team as freshmen.

Slatton has been a golfing sensation all through middle school, competing in some of the top junior golf tournaments in the Southeast. She’s currently ranked No. 22 in the state.

When asked if he expects Slatton to make a push for the state tournament, coach Holt said, “She should be in contention.”

Girls golf allows three players to compete as a team, with the top two scores counting toward the team score. Slatton and Blaylock can compete as a team as just two players, but both their scores must count.

The Warren County teams will start practicing July 13 with the first match set for July 27.
