Marley Harris is striving to be the next great female wrestler for WCHS.

The Southern Standard, partnering with R3 Logistics and Mud Bums Family Sports Grill, will be honoring a Pioneer of the Week throughout the year. Our honoree from Dec. 31  - Jan. 6 is WCHS Lady Pioneer wrestler Marley Harris.

Wrestling is experiencing a resurgence in Warren County, but it's not just the Pioneers - young and old - who are getting the job done on the mat. Marley Harris is starting to become a force in the female division, bringing back a proud local tradition of female wrestlers becoming stars for the Red, White and Blue.

Harris, who is the daughter of girls wrestling head coach Josh Harris, placed fourth in the Red Hawk Rampage over the weekend. The junior was battling in a bracket of 25 grapplers and made it to the semifinals before falling twice to end her day.

Harris, who already had eight wins coming into the prestigious tournament, won her way to the semifinals by dominating Kayla Bolvin from Rockvale and Riverdale senior Carter Grissom. Harris won both matches by pinfall, dropping Bolvin in 1:52 and needing just 71 seconds to get Grissom on the mat for good.

Harris is part of a growing wrestling program that has also brought in Cannon County as a co-op program this year, giving coach Josh Harris and boys coach Matt Turner a huge group of kids with major interest on the mat.

Warren County wrestling will be back at home Thursday for a big battle with Riverdale.
