With the district tournament behind them and the region tournament starting Friday, Warren County had some key players recognized for their roles this season with four being awarded All-District honors -- Kyra Perkins, Shelby Smartt and Sable Winfree for the Lady Pioneers and Sawyer Seymour for the Pioneers.

Seymour led the Pioneers in the district tournament in terms of scoring as he never seemed to miss a 3-pointer. He was hot in the first round against Coffee County putting up a solid 18 points.

“He played well and shot the ball really well,” said Pioneer head coach Chris Sullens. “He’s our most consistent shooter on our squad and has put in a tremendous amount of work to get to that point.”

Perkins was awarded All-District for her assertive attitude on the court and making inside shots. Lady Pioneer head coach Anthony Lippe said, “Kyra does a lot on the defensive end and gets rebounds for us.”

Perkins was voted MVP of the Sonic Shootout over Christmas break and has aided the Lady Pioneers on the way to a 23-win season. She averaged 11.9 points per game, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.4 steals.

Smartt was voted All-District after stepping up in the second half of the season. She averaged 11.3 points per game, 2.4 assists, and 2.0 steals. “She can shoot the ball well, is a leader for the team, and has fought through many injuries,” said Lippe about his junior sparkplug.

Sable Winfree earned All-District recognition her sophomore season where she averaged 9.3 points, 3.4 assists, and 2.8 steals per game.

“Sable really steps up when things are on the line,” said Lippe. He credited her for fighting through injuries as well, calling her extremely tough.

The Lady Pioneers will host the first round of the region tournament on Friday against Cleveland. “It’s going to be tough,” said Lippe. “There are no easy games from this point forward.”

The Pioneers play their first-round region tournament game on the road Saturday.
