The boys of summer will have a chance to return to the baseball diamond at McMinnville Civic Center very soon.
Starting July 16, the Warren County Youth Baseball Association will begin holding sign-ups for fall leagues to be played at McMinnville Civic Center.
Two leagues will be offered to boys ranging from ages 6-10. A 6-8 boys machine-pitch league will be played on the Jim Mansfield Field, while a boys 8-10 junior league will be held at Hoover and Millraney Field.
New McMinnville Parks and Recreation director Scott McCord is happy to announce the return of baseall with two fall leagues. The plan developed quickly during the course of spring, when baseball and softball leagues ran each night at the Civic Center from April to June.
The decision was made to keep the leagues to the age groups which had the most participants during the spring leagues. The idea is to gauge the popularity of the leagues this fall, then hopefully expand in the coming years.
League commissioner Dell Watson thinks the fall leagues will be a hit with kids in the community.
“We’re very excited about the leagues,” said Watson. “They are a great way for the kids to have fun.”
League games are scheduled to be played on Monday nights, but some Friday games may be added during the course of the season.
The registration fee is $50, which includes a T-shirt.
Sign-ups will run from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on July 16-20 at McMinnville Civic Center. The final day of registration is Saturday, July 21 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at McMinnville Civic Center. No late sign-ups will be accepted.
To be eligible to play, children must have turned 6 by April 30, 2012. Any child who turned 8 by April 30, 2012, will play in the junior league, which features live pitching.
Games will begin Monday, Aug. 6. Teams will play a full regular-season schedule and a tournament will follow.
