Eastside girls roll past Boyd
C.J. Perry of Boyd takes the ball to the basket against Avery Bolding of Eastside during action Monday night in the Morrison Ruritan Tournament. Eastside prevailed.

Sarah Kate Winfree was a demon on the Eastside 5-6 grade girls basketball team. Nothing has changed now that she's playing for the 7-8 grade Lady Bulldogs.

Winfree was impossible to contain Monday night as she lifted Eastside to a 41-11 victory over Boyd in the first round of the Morrison Ruritan Tournament.

Winfree scored a game-high 20 points, including 12 in the opening quarter, as Eastside took control early. Alyssa Parsley added 8 points.

The top scorers for Boyd were Dara Stubblefield and C.J. Perry with 4 each.

The Lady Broncos charged out of the gate galloping at full speed as Raylee Vinson connected on a 3-pointer and Perry drained a 15-footer. Eastside clung to a 6-5 lead midway through the opening quarter.

But that’s when the Lady Bulldogs would pull away as Boyd would only score 2 more points in the first half and Winfree started to heat up. Winfree drove the baseline for a layup, then added a backcourt steal she converted into another layup to put Eastside ahead 14-5.

Parsley made her presence felt in the second quarter when she showed she can score from the paint. Parsley was able to muscle up a tough shot in heavy traffic that made its way through the basket as Eastside found some breathing room up 28-7 at the half.

The Lady Broncos played with intensity on both ends of the floor and showed plenty of hustle from the opening tip until the final whistle. But the team couldn’t get enough of its shots to fall to keep pace with Winfree and the Lady Bulldogs.
