It is a tough task to try and keep the Morrison Eagles grounded and to keep them grounded on their home court is even tougher. On Tuesday evening, the Boyd Christian Broncos took on the Eagles in Morrison.
Despite the Broncos’ efforts, the high-flying Eagles soared to a 46-19 win over Boyd. Will Hyder from Morrison led all scorers and recorded a game-high 10 points.
The Eagles took flight in the first quarter and poured shots in over the Bronco defense. Irving Espinoza led the Eagle offensive attack. Espinoza shot a pair of baskets in close and then stepped back behind the 3-point line and knocked down the shot from deep. He connected for seven, first-quarter points.
Rylan Holder and Kasen Holder combined for eight points as the offensive surge continued against the Bronco defense in the first. Dominique Betancourt added a third 3-pointer before the end of the quarter.
The Boyd offense was blanketed by Eagle defenders who were very quick to the ball. Jordan Hoover for Boyd was the only offense in the first quarter when he was left alone just long enough to get a good look past the 3-point line and at the end of the first Boyd trailed 18-3.
The Eagles pulled back their relentless pressure in the second quarter and the Broncos found their way through the defense and scored eight points before the half. Jamison Brock took the ball at the defense and scored a pair for Boyd.
While the defense backed into the paint the ball was kicked out to Brayden Scott, who delivered on a 3-pointer. The Boyd offense was settled in but the struggles on defense continued.
Dawson Waldron for Morrison fired a shot over the defense and connected from behind the 3-point line. Hyder picked up a pair of easy baskets for four of his 10-point total. By the half, Morrison was in control and Boyd trailed 27-11.
Morrison continued the second half with pressure on the ball and Boyd could not seem to find the range. Dallas Greene was the sole source of offense in the third quarter.
Rylan Holder added his final eight points in the third and Elijah Fults shot 2-for-2 after he was sent to the free-throw line. At the end of three, Boyd trailed 35-13.
By the fourth both teams emptied the benches and Boyd improved its shot selection in the fourth. Mark Mason and Tyler Jakes scored for the Broncos before the final horn.
The Eagles played back and waited for just the right moments and Philip Burton recorded a pair of baskets before time expired. Hyder finished with a strong six-point quarter and the Eagles defeated the Broncos, 46-19.
