Eagles bounce back with dominant performance

Morrison Eagle Kason Holder, left, eyeballs the hoop while Dibrell defenders Bryson Elrod, center, and Aaron Ashburn, right, put up the defense.

After dropping their first in-county game this season to Eastside on Tuesday night, the Morrison Eagles came back in force, defeating the visiting Dibrell Wildcats 54-24 on Thursday.
As if to add an exclamation mark, Morrison’s Dawson Waldron made a half-court statement with a buzzer-beater to end the contest. It was the second trey Waldron made in the fourth quarter.
“We had a player out and didn’t play our usual game Tuesday,” said Morrison coach Kyle Cannon. “Sometimes it takes a loss to shock the team out of their complacency and now we’re back.”
With Ryland Holder back in the game but still nursing a broken finger, Kason Holder held nothing back as he worked the paint and scored from every direction. Kason Holder had a game-high 32 points to his credit as he was unstoppable.
Shots from the foul line were met with mediocrity by both teams as Morrison went 7-of-14 for 50 percent, while Dibrell was 9-of-24 for 38 percent. Even if they had the 15 points they left on the table from the foul line, Dibrell wouldn’t have had enough to overcome the Eagles.
Dominique Betancourt drove the offense for Morrison well and made an impact getting the forced turnovers as you never knew where he would be as Morrison’s defense used an aggressive strategy where coverage is switched often and the offense has to stay on its toes not to be caught from behind.
Dibrell’s offense was led by Bryson Elrod and Rheagan Woodlee who both hit for 5 points apiece, Jordan Sandlin, Will Wrisner and Aaron Ashburn all had 3 points each, Trevor Womack 2 and Caden Davis hit 1 point from the charity stripe.
Topping off the Eagles tally were Ryland Holder with 8 points, Waldron with 6 points, Betancourt 5, Lorenzo Hernandez 2, and Parker Yates made 1 point from the foul line.
Morrison will travel to Irving College while Dibrell will make a trip to Eastside on Tuesday, Jan 17. Games begin at 6 p.m.
