The night started off on the wrong foot for WCMS when the Lady Pioneers dropped the first game of the night to the Dibrell Lady Wildcats. The Lady Wildcats pounced early and the Lady Pioneers never recovered in the 24-14 loss Thursday night.
Karlee Cantrell for Dibrell was the game’s high scorer with eight points.
The Lady Wildcats clawed and scratched their way to an early 16-6 lead by the half. WCMS picked up its defense in the second half and slowed the Lady Wildcats’ offense. The Lady Pioneers found ways to score again after they were held scoreless in the second period.
In the third period, Emma Parsley and Cantrell found their way through the WCMS defense for the only four points in the third. Mistakes cost the Lady Wildcats scoring opportunities in the second half.
In the third period, WCMS upped its pressure on defense and forced turnovers. Marli McBride and Bella Cantrell were able to get WCMS back on track. Although the offense was back on track, the Lady Pioneers needed more of it.
The fourth quarter started and the Lady Wildcats led by nine points. Both teams tried to weather the storm and the offenses were drained. Brianna Winkler scored all four of Dibrell’s fourth-quarter points.
Cantrell got a little help from Ebonie Ross on a made free-throw attempt. The WCMS offense appeared to be out of sync and the defense could not find ways to slow the Lady Wildcat offense enough to mount a come-from-behind win.
The first half lead built by Dibrell was enough and kept the Lady Pioneers at bay. Dibrell went on to a 24-14 win over WCMS.
