The Dibrell Wildcats finished the regular season of the 7-8 grade Warren County elementary boys league with a 10-0 record and two players stood out during their unbeaten streak.
Eighth-grader Christian Wilkinson and seventh-grader Trey Cantrell helped the Wildcats win the regular-season elementary title in the 7-8 grade league for the second straight season and the Dibrell duo headlines the Southern Standard All-County team.
Morrison Eagle Holden Baker, Eastside Bulldog Tyler Beaty and Irving College Tiger Logan Martin join Wilkinson and Cantrell on the first team.
Wilkinson has starred for the Wildcats since he was in fourth grade and he finishes his career at Dibrell without a loss in the regular season.
Wilkinson started this season by scoring the first basket in Dibrell’s new gym and finished it by leading the league in scoring with an average of 17.7 points per game.
Even if teams were successful in slowing down Wilkinson, Cantrell was there to pick up the slack. The lefty guard was equally adept at getting to the rim or filling it up from long distance. Cantrell finished third in the league in scoring, averaging over 11 points per game.
Baker helped carry the offensive load for Morrison as the team finished the regular season 5-5. The eighth-grade Eagle foward twice scored 19 points this season, the first coming in a 31-25 victory over Centertown Jan. 9.
Beaty can score in bunches, but the seventh-grade post really shined on the defensive end. Eastside’s human eraser closed down the lane with big blocks on a nightly basis. Offensively, Beaty averaged 9.1 points per game with a season-high 14 points against Boyd Jan. 14.
Martin burst onto the scene in the preseason Morrison Ruritan tournament when he led the Tigers past Dibrell. Martin scored 11 points as the Tigers became the first team to beat the Wildcats in two seasons. Martin followed it up by finishing fifth in the league in scoring with 9.7 points per game.
The Southern Standard All-County second team consists of Boyd guard Philip Brock, Centertown guard Sam Deason, Morrison guard Hunter Hall, Irving College forward Tyler Morton and Eastside forward Dakota Nunley.
