Rugby debuted in fine fashion Wednesday night, scoring a pair of victories in their home openers.

The boys team took down Rutherford County 29-27, while the girls prevailed over Blackman 17-10.

The girls opened play with a back-and-forth match with Blackman. Warren County had to rally twice from deficits, only to take the lead on a Shelby Clark two-point conversion kick and seal it with a Caitlyn Jerrell score.

“It was one of the best games we’ve ever played,” said coach George Smartt. “It was a nail-biting situation. Our girls didn’t quit. It was a very exciting game, one everybody enjoyed.”

Lakiah Babb and Abbey Bann added scores in the victory.

On the boys side, Warren County was powered to its win by scores from Logan Holman, Austin McBride, Josh Macanas, Garrett Vallem and Francisco Hernandez. William Fernandez also added two important conversion kicks, helping to edge Rutherford.

Both teams will be back in action at home Tuesday, April 9. The WCHS rugby teams are set to play McMinn County, with action set to start at 5 p.m.
