Kiamesha Crisp has always had spirit. Now she gets a chance to spread it at Cumberland University.
The Warren County senior cheerleader signed a scholarship Thursday, giving her a chance to join the Phoenix cheer team this fall. It was an opportunity Crisp, who has cheered since she was 7, couldn’t pass up.
“I’m excited to continue on cheering,” said Crisp, who was joined by friends, family and teammates at her signing. “I look forward to being with a new cheer team and facing new challenges. It’s a chance to start new and meet new people and create bonds.”
Crisp was a big part of the WCHS cheer team this season. The group spends lots of time cheering on WCHS teams, but coach Whitney Dyer is happy she’ll get to support a former standout next season.
“We’re going to miss her, but we know she’ll do well. We can’t wait to cheer her on,” said Dyer at the signing.
Crisp created an immediate bond when visiting Cumberland University. She loved the small-town feel and the interactions with professors, especially those in the nursing program.
She also had a chance to form a friendship with cheer captain Kalea Barnett, who attended Thursday’s signing.
“We’re really excited to have Kiamesha’s strength. She’s (going to be) a very valuable part of our team,” said Barnett.
Crisp leaves behind some life-long friends, those who were made over long practices and road trips, her favorite times.
“The away games and camps always stood out,” said Crisp. “I always enjoyed getting to bond with the girls.”
She’ll have her chance with a new group this fall.
