After wins over Currey Ingram, 9-5, and Riverside Christian Academy, 1-0, the Covenant Academy Lions took on Dickson’s undefeated West Academy for the soccer championship game in Brentwood on Saturday.
Both teams went scoreless in the first half before Covenant Academy took a 1-0 lead with a Taylor Madewell penalty kick in the second half.
West didn’t let down however, and knotted the game 1-1 after getting behind Covenant’s defense. With 10 minutes left, West found the net one more time to win the contest, 2-1.
“Our kids played their hearts out,” said Covenant soccer coach Chris Madewell. “We played against a bigger and faster team and still almost came out on top. Our defense played outstanding, even though we had our starting sweeper out. Our goalie, Jackson Smith, made some great saves. The midfielders and strikers were able to keep pressure on their defense the whole game. I have been impressed all season how our team has stepped up to the level of our competition, no matter how strong they were. Whatever I ask from the players, they were willing to do. I am proud of all of the players and have enjoyed this season.”
Madewell and Jackson Smith received Middle Tennessee Athletic Conference all-tournament awards.
