Fans have grown accustomed to watching freshmen suit up and play at Nunley Stadium in recent years, but it’s always been on Friday nights for varsity games.Former WCMS football coach and current high school assistant Greg Cotten would like to see the nights the freshmen play change, starting with this upcoming school year.Coach Cotten is hoping to restart freshman football at WCHS, something that hasn’t been in place the last three years as numbers dwindled too much to field a team. Being the winningiest coach in WCMS football history, coach Cotten has had success in the past and hopes to bring the same results to the freshman program.Setting a goal of finding 30 freshmen willing to suit up this fall, coach Cotten has already met his mark and exceeded it. With a roster currently exceeding 40, and potential visits to county schools still a possibility, coach Cotten hopes to have five games this fall that are freshmen only.“I feel it’s important to have a freshman team, which gives the players an even playing ground to compete on,” said Cotten.
