The Security Federal Tennis Tournament marked a first for local resident Leigh Ann Stewart.

She had entered academic competitions in the past, but she had never ventured into the realm of sports to put her athleticism to the test.

Based on the results of the Security Federal Tournament which ended Saturday, Stewart may have the physical skills to match her smarts. She teamed with tennis veteran Susan Barrett to win the Ladies B Doubles division. Barrett and Stewart emerged victorious in the championship over the well-balanced duo of Carlene Brown and Christy Gilliam.

“That match was especially exciting because it was all local women in the finals,” said tournament organizer David Dunlap.

The tournament started Tuesday and weathered several rain-outs before coming to an end Saturday night around 9 p.m. after a full day of matches.

“I had the last match of the day Saturday night and was pretty tired because I had been there since 7 a.m.,” said Dunlap, who lost that match in the Men’s B Doubles finals. “We were facing two pretty good opponents, including one guy who will be playing college tennis and should have probably been placed in the A Division.”

Dunlap finished runner-up in that division, but was able to be crowned a champion in Mixed B Doubles. He teamed with Jamie Wynn to defeat a team half their age.

“The old-timers definitely pulled an upset in that one,” said Dunlap. “I don’t know how we won.”

There were 85 competitors in 11 divisions. For those who missed the excitement of the Security Federal Tournament, registration is under way for the Dr Pepper Tennis Tournament to be held Aug. 4-6 on the four outdoor courts next to Milner Recreation Center.

The cost to register is $15 for each division. There are divisions for men and women, mixed doubles, and boys and girls ages 10 and 12. Competition will take place in A, B and C classes.

To enter, send your name, phone number, and the division(s) you wish to enter to David Dunlap, 208 Donnell Street, McMinnville, TN 37110.
