Lady Pioneer Maddie Cantrell threw a rare perfect game for the WCMS Friday night in its 3-0 win over Franklin North. Cantrell and the Lady Pioneer defense did not allow any players to make it to base the entire game.

While the Pioneers took care of business against Franklin North on Thursday night in the middle school postseason baseball tournament in Sparta, the Lady Pioneers took care of Franklin North in the postseason softball tournament held Friday night in Tullahoma.
The Lady Pioneers got off to a quick start and scored the team’s only three runs in the first inning. After that it was all defense for both teams. WCMS defeated Franklin North by a final score of 3-0 in the second round of the softball tournament.
Lady Pioneer Maddie Cantrell went to work inside the pitching circle. Cantrell pitched a perfect game and allowed no runs and no hits and two strikeouts.
In the top of the first inning, the Lady Pioneer defense set the tone. Franklin North made contact with the ball and the Lady Pioneers were ready. The WCMS defense stepped up huge and its relentless pursuit of the ball retired the side in order in the first inning.
Lady Pioneer Hailey Wood drew a lead-off walk to get WCMS started on the right foot in the bottom of the first. Wood wasted little time and advanced to second then third base before Ashton Whiles hit a shot to second base for the first out that allowed Wood to score the first run and take a 1-0 lead.
Emily Mikkola made it to first base on a single she put in left field, then Bri Young was up with one out and she reached on an error by the shortstop and Mikkola advanced to second base. MaKenna Mason singled to first and Mikkola made it across the plate for a 2-0 WCMS lead. Marah Wanamaker rifled a ground ball to shortstop for out two, but allowed Young to cross the plate and just like that it was 3-0. Grace Rains hit a ball back to the pitcher and the inning was over and WCMS led 3-0.
The top of the second was a mirror image of the first inning and the Lady Pioneer defense had held Franklin North for the second straight inning as it was three up, three down.
Franklin North responded with a defensive stand of its own and it was the Lady Pioneers who went down in order for the first time and after two complete innings it was WCMS out front by a score of 3-0.
Once again it was a one, two, three inning for Franklin North for the third straight time as Cantrell found her groove. She was unhittable.
The only thing good from the Lady Pioneers in the bottom of the third inning was a lead-off base hit by Whiles. She stole second and was base hit around to third but that is as far as she would get. The following three batters went down in order.
Franklin North was back to the top of the lineup for the top of the fourth inning but it did not matter to Cantrell and the Lady Pioneer defense. Almost everything Franklin North was able to put a bat on went up in the air. WCMS had its fourth consecutive inning in taking Franklin North down in order.
In the bottom of the fourth, WCMS went back to work after a lead-off out. Grace Rains started the inning off with a walk and Cantrell reached on an error at third base. After those two reached second and third, Franklin North got back-to-back outs to end the inning.
The Lady Pioneer defense held on and shut down Franklin North for the fifth inning in a row to give Cantrell a perfect game and the 3-0 win allowed WCMS to advance to the next round of the post-season to be played Saturday with results not available at press time.
