Just getting on the field was a huge success for the Boyd soccer program last year following a 14-year absence. The Broncos have their sights set on even bigger goals this year.
Boyd has started 2-1 on the pitch following Monday’s 7-1 walloping of Currey Ingram. Connor Andrews and Jordan Perry did major damage for the Broncos as both recorded hat tricks in the win. Andrews finished with four goals – giving him seven scores through three games – and Perry netted three as Boyd picked up its second win in TNCAA competition.
“The kids are having fun,” said coach Chris Perry, who is in his first year coaching the soccer team. “It’s been a great experience so far. I’m learning with the players and I look forward to their continued growth. I think the next game or two might serve as a barometer for where we are against more experience competition.”
Boyd played as a co-ed team in the TSIAA boys division last year, using its first season back to build basic fundamentals and attract more kids to the sport. The Broncos were able to win a handful of games while playing a number of inexperienced kids, including several middle schoolers in the high school division. A switch to TNCAA, which has co-ed teams at nearly every school, and adding more players (Boyd has over 20 kids on its roster) has fueled a hot start for the Broncos.
“One of the biggest factors (for the team’s early success) for us this year is an influx of high school talent. New faces like Brooke Kesey, Jack Oliver and even Dylan Vandeveer and Jordin Mitchell – who haven’t played soccer much, if at all – have improved our overall athleticism. That has freed up our more experienced players – Connor, Jordan and CJ (Perry) – to be more aggressive,” said coach Perry.
Andrews and Perry becoming scoring machines didn’t hurt the team’s chances at winning either.
The dynamic duo atop the Bronco attack went to work early against Currey Ingram. It was a constant barrage on the net as Boyd controlled possession and took advantage of multiple scoring opportunities in the first half.
Andrews and Perry each weaved their way through the defense early for goals, while relentless effort helped make it 4-0 before halftime. Already ahead 2-0, Andrews netted his second score by following up on a rebound after a Boyd shot hit the top bar. Andrews ran through with perfect timing, heading the ball into the net before the Currey Ingram keeper could recover.
