The Boyd Broncos baseball team extended its winning streak to six games and improved their record to 12-3 on the season Friday night as they defeated the Cannon County Lions, on the road, 13-3. The Broncos scored five runs in the top of the first and never looked back.
Jace Brantley led all Bronco hitters at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a single, double, four-RBIs and two runs scored. Branson Well got it done on the mound for the Broncos, going three an two-third innings, allowing three runs and striking out six Lion batters.
The Broncos struck first in the top of the first inning when Wells doubled to the outfield, scoring Jalyn Mart, 1-0. A Jace Brantley RBI single, a Dylan Legeune 2-RBI single and a fielder’s choice, scoring a run had the Broncos up, 5-0, heading into the bottom of the inning.
The Lions answered in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own from two errors by the Broncos and an RBI double, 5-3, after one. Jace Brantley helped add to the Broncos lead in the top of the second, hitting a 2-RBI double, 7-3.
Wells sat down the Lions in order in the bottom of the inning to keep the score the same. The Broncos weren’t done scoring as they added four more runs in the top of the fourth thanks to two fielder’s choices by the Lions and a 2-RBI double by Isaiah Owens, 11-3.
The Broncos added two more runs to their lead courtesy of a Ben McCormack RBI single and a sacrifice fly. The Lions didn’t have an answer for the scoring the rest of the way as Jace Brantley came on in relief to shut down the Lions, keeping them from making any sort of comeback at home and the Broncos prevailed 13-3.
The Broncos will look to make it seven consecutive wins as they will be back on the road in DeKalb County tomorrow night as they take on the DeKalb West Bulldogs.
