The Broncos proved anything can happen in the tournament on Tuesday night. Boyd trailed Eastside through three quarters. Near the end of the third Boyd made a run at the lead and tied the score at 22-22.
Minutes into the fourth quarter, Boyd claimed the lead and held off Eastside and defeated the Bulldogs, 32-28.
Cruz Reyes for Eastside and Dallas Greene for Boyd each scored 11 points during the first-round game.
With nearly two minutes to play, Boyd finally claimed the lead at 28-27. Alec Hobbs for Eastside drove the lane and was fouled as he shot the ball. He stepped to the free-throw line and hit his first attempt. The score was tied at 28-28. His second shot missed and Boyd rebounded.
Brayden Scott took the ball through the Eastside defense all the way to the rim. His shot dropped and the Broncos led 30-28.
The two teams traded misses and a loose ball in the corner was tied up and whistled a jump ball. The possession went to Boyd and the Broncos went on the attack. The Bronco shot rimmed out with 1:00 to play.
Boyd fouled near midcourt and Eastside set up its offense down by two. The Bulldogs got an open look from the corner and the 3-pointer hit the rim and bounced over the backboard.
Boyd took over and called timeout with :44 to play. The Broncos set up and the ball went into Greene. He made a quick move to the basket and beat the Bulldog defender. Help came late and Greene was fouled. The shot dropped. Boyd led 32-28 with Greene at the line.
The free throw attempt by Greene was made and waived off by a lane violation. Boyd led 32-28.
A pair of turnovers and Bryson Stiles finally chased down the loose ball. He was fouled and sent to the free-throw line. His shot missed and Boyd rebounded. Boyd ran the final seconds off the clock and defeated Eastside, 32-28.
The Bulldogs hustled through the first quarter and outscored Boyd in the first 11-8. Charlie Moore led the Bulldogs offense with five points.
Four different Bronco players combined to keep Boyd within three points of the lead.
Boyd turned up the pressure on the defensive end. Jordan Hoover connected from behind the arch while Greene worked inside.
Alec Hobbs led Eastside with four points and at the half Boyd was within one, 16-15.
Boyd never stopped and continued its pressure defense and the Bulldogs struggled. Greene went back to work inside against the Bulldogs. Scott buried his first 3-pointer and by the end of the third quarter the Broncos tied the score, 22-22.
The Broncos outlasted the Bulldogs and ended their tournament in the first round. Boyd defeated Eastside with a 32-28 loss.
The Broncos face the Morrison Eagles in the second round Thursday night with results not available at press time.
