The Boyd Christian Lady Broncos won the second annual End of Summer Slam on Saturday finishing 5-0. Boyd hosted the tournament as a kickoff to the season and the Lady Broncos showed why they’ll be a threat this year.
They started the morning facing Highland Rim and beat them in two sets, 25-16 then 15-8. Boyd later faced Smith Community Christian Co-op (SC3) where they lost one set 25-21 in a close matchup. Luckily, the Lady Broncos won the decisive third set 15-9 giving Boyd the win.
The Lady Broncos took on United Christian and won handily 25-8 and 25-4. Boyd became the No. 1 seed out of the four competing teams and secured a championship spot after defeating the lower-seeded SC3.
Krista Chisam was a force on the court with 46 serves and 10 aces. Chisam played well in the back to keep the ball in control. Mia Onderka followed close behind serving 39 times. Emma Miller, Onderka and Anslee McCrary were also strong hitting 5, 4, and 3 aces, respectively.
McCrary and Layna Byars were also strong servers with McCrary serving 26 and Byars serving 22 times for the Lady Broncos. They faced Highland Rim for the championship game where they won the first set 25-20.
However, Highland Rim came back and took the second set leaving it up to the third set for the Lady Broncos to win. In a close set, Boyd edged out the win 15-11 in the final set and took home the first-place trophy in the tournament.
Onderka was awarded with all-tournament for the Lady Broncos, and Chisam was named MVP at the end of the day.
