Boyd wrapped up a regular season title at home Tuesday, beating bitter rival Franklin Road Christian 65-51. Senior Krista Chisam came up huge for Boyd, scoring a career-high 19 points and hitting five triples while freshman Brooke Kesey added 18 points and eight rebounds.
"I'm so proud of these girls," said coach Tim Page. "We lost to the same team twice last year and now we were able to bounce back and win both matchups this year. Our girls work hard, play well together and came out ready to go."
Boyd (18-12) was off to the races early, ripping off an 8-0 run in the first two minutes behind six quick points from Kesey. The Lady Minutemen settled in, eventually taking a 24-23 lead in the second quarter, but outside shooting kept Boyd afloat.
Macie Bush came off the bench to splash two 3-pointers in the second quarter, while Chisam nailed a deep shot from the right corner to help Boyd build a 38-30 lead by halftime.
Foul trouble for Chisam, Kesey and senior point guard Paige Sweeten threatened the Lady Broncos in the second half, but Boyd's depth came in for the rescue.
Senior Emma Miller had a huge bucket late in the third, driving into the teeth of the Franklin Road Christian defense for a layup. Regin Grissom followed with a lefty putback, pushing Boyd up 51-42 entering the fourth.
Kesey added the finishing touches late, putting away the Lady Minutemen with a pair of buckets in the post to give Boyd the South Division title.
Sweeten also played a huge part, dishing out a season-high eight assists and swiping four steals. Cydney Jane Perry was a force on both ends, finishing with five points, three assists, two blocks and a steal.
Boyd was back in action Thursday for senior night. See Sunday's Standard for more details.
