The Lady Broncos capped their season on the hardwood Friday with a second-place finish in the NACA tournament.
Boyd was unable to capture the Division 7 championship, falling to Christian Ministries, Ark., 57-38 in the championship game at Dayton. It was a tough night for the Lady Broncos, who rolled off two wins to advance to the finals.
“I’m proud of them. They did so well, but we ran into a really good team,” said coach Erin Blalock after her team brought home the runner-up trophy.
It wasn’t the only hardware coming back with the Lady Broncos though. Kapri Talley and Anna Jones were each named all-tournament at the event, matching their recognition in the recent MTAC tournament.
Talley averaged 8.8 points and was among the team leaders in rebounds, assists and steals over four games, while Jones was dominant in the paint, scoring 19 points per game over the week of games.
Jones was particularly dominant in pushing Boyd into the finals, scoring 33 points in a 55-25 win over New Hope, N.C., in the semifinals.
The Lady Broncos also beat Heritage, N.C., 54-25 on their way to the finals.
In the championship game, Christian Ministries used the long ball in the third quarter to pull away. The eventual champions sank four 3-pointers in the period, turning a 25-18 halftime lead into an insurmountable 18-point advantage before the fourth quarter.
Talley did her best scoring in the championship game, finishing with 13 points. Zoe Witty was next with nine points, followed by Jones with eight, Syd Durham with six and McKenna Powell with two.
Boyd’s scrappy seven-player team, which also includes Lexi Loader and Sarah Woodruff, was a factor throughout the week before running out of steam late.
