Boyd sweeps Daniel 1 Academy
Broncos win at the buzzer
The Boyd Broncos celebrate at mid-court just moments after Collin Stubblefield hit the winning shot Tuesday night to give the Broncos a 64-63 comeback win over Daniel 1 Academy.

Tuesday night in Westwood, the Boyd Broncos played host to Daniel 1 Academy in what could only be described as an epic battle of will. These two teams went after each other with everything they had on both sides of the ball.
It would be Bronco Collin Stubblefield at the end who would be the hero for Boyd. Stubblefield would hit a deep 3-point shot with :02 on the clock, sending the Boyd faithful into a frenzy with the winning shot.
The Broncos would be faced with shot selection and turnovers down the stretch as the offense seemed to have lost its edge after playing on a high level for much of the game. But in a last-ditch effort from the Broncos in the closing seconds, Boyd would go in front as time expired and outlast the Lions, 64-63.
Tyler Beaty shot the lights out against the Lions. Beaty scored the first 10 points of the game for the Broncos, hitting back to back 3-point shots early and scoring 27 points by the game’s end.
At the end of the third quarter Boyd was out front 48-40. Boyd had led the entire game and coach Buddy Majors’ concern has always been closing out games. The Broncos would find this out the hard way Tuesday night as Daniel 1 Academy was anything but finished.
Behind an array of 3-pointers, Daniel 1 stormed back. With the game now tied at 50, things were about to go from bad to worse for the Broncos. Turnovers were plentiful as Boyd was feeling the pressure and trying to force the pace. Daniel 1 would take its first lead with 5:16 to play, forcing coach Majors to call for timeout to try and slow the Lions momentum.
Now with the Lions leading 52-50 it would be Tyler Judkins for Boyd to step up to the line after drawing a foul and shooting free throws. Judkins would only connect on one, bringing the Lion lead back to one. Daniel 1 would not waiver and drove the length of the floor taking it right to the defense and scoring, moving the lead back to three.
Daniel 1 would eventually stretch its lead to seven points. Robby Selig shot misses and Edgar Morales would be fouled on the put back attempt sending him to the line. Morales would hit one of two. The Broncos were crashing the boards for rebounds in hopes of keeping the ball alive and getting second chance scoring opportunities.
Daniel would get an open look and score again, the lead is cut back to four and this time the Lions would call for time with 2:28 to play. A bad time for a Boyd turnover and Daniel 1 would capitalize on the mistake and score, extending its lead to six.
Stubblefield is heading to the line after being fouled and would hit both, cutting the Lions lead back down to four. With time being a factor for Boyd now under two minutes to play Daniel 1 is fouled and would be unable to connect on the front end of a one-and-one. Boyd drives the entire floor only to come up empty. Daniel 1 would be fouled immediately after the Boyd miss and would come away from the free-throw line empty again.
Inside a minute to play and the Lions up by four, Stubblefield would find an open look from behind the arch and hit, bringing the lead to one for the Lions. The crowd already on their feet would erupt after the made 3-point shot. Boyd trails 62-61 with Daniel shooting free throws after the Broncos foul. This time the Lions would hit one of two taking the lead back to two points.
Boyd would move the ball the entire length of the floor and the coach for Daniel 1 screaming “watch 30, watch 30” the Broncos would find an open Stubblefield to hoist up a jumper from behind the 3-point line. It would find its mark, Stubblefield hits the three-point shot with only two ticks on the clock. The Lions would not have enough time to even get a good look at a shot.
Early on for Boyd Beaty would score the first 10 points of the game for Boyd setting the tone for the night. Boyd would get out and outrun Daniel 1 in the early minutes. The full-court pressure defense made getting the ball across tough for Daniel 1 early, also giving the Broncos scoring opportunities in transition.
Daniel 1 would calm down and get settled into the Bronco style of play. The Lions would find a flurry of points late in the second quarter and get within one point of Boyd. Robby Selig would steal the ball and score to end the Daniel 1 run. Morales would connect on a 3-point play after hitting the shot and drawing the foul. Daniel 1 would score once more before the half and the Broncos would lead 35-29.
Much of the third both teams would try to catch their breath and set up the offense. Low scores in the third would lead to the exciting finish that was about to take place. By the end of the game Boyd would receive a little divine intervention on a last second three-point shot and send Daniel 1 Academy back home with a loss by a final score of 64-63.
