Friday night the Lady Broncos squared off against a very tough Lionette team from Providence Academy in what would prove to be a challenging matchup for the Lady Broncos on senior night. Rhiannon Hoover led Boyd with 17 points, followed closely by Morgan Deweese with 14 points for the Lady Broncos.
It was a tough game right from the start and the Lady Broncos knew it would be a battle from the early going. Full-court pressure on the ball kept the Lady Broncos corralled in the first quarter with points coming from Mackenzie Pistole and Deweese from outside and in the paint. Senior Brooklyn Bain would drop a 3-point bomb on target for Boyd in the first quarter.
Providence pushed the tempo and came out firing in the second, posting 22 points and holding the Lady Broncos to eight. The Lionette defense was much more disciplined on its assignments and seemed as though the Lady Broncos had nowhere to go at times. Hoover and Deweese would keep the momentum going for Boyd heading into the halftime break, and Providence had extended its lead to 33-23 at the half.
The Lady Broncos would regroup at the half and rise to coach Brent Warren’s challenge, making a huge defensive stand against the Lionettes by outscoring them 17-15 in the third. The Lady Broncos had responded with full-court pressure of their own and Providence was forced into making a few bad decisions on the offensive side giving it back to the Lady Broncos. Erin Cantrell and Bain would show their accuracy once again from behind the arch and hitting their target. Deweese had her biggest quarter with eight of her 14 in the third.
As the Broncos were climbing back into the game at 48-40, Providence turned back up the heat on the Lady Bronco offense. Providence’s shot selection was much better down the stretch the previous quarter and they outscored Boyd 22-16 in the final period. Pistole was working hard in the paint drawing the fouls, Pistole was perfect from the line in the fourth quarter hitting all eight of her free-throws. Hoover added seven in the final quarter as well but Providence had done the damage early and they would escape Boyd with a big win over the Lady Broncos on senior night by a final score of 70-56.
