Boyd blasts Dibrell

If the Boyd Lady Broncos ever get tired of playing at J.K. Stanley Gymnasium, the team can always move to its second home in Morrison.
For the second straight season, the Lady Broncos won the preseason 7-8 grade Morrison Ruritan tournament held at Morrison Gym. Boyd claimed the championship Saturday night by defeating the Dibrell Lady Wildcats 42-16.
Boyd shocked the field of six teams last year to claim the championship, but the Lady Broncos looked comfortable playing at Morrison during their second run to the tournament title.
With a group of eighth-graders, led by point guard Rhiannon Hoover and posts Anna Bain and MacKenzie Pistole, Boyd dominated its three games on the way to a championship.
The Lady Broncos beat Morrison 41-15 Thursday, then followed with a 46-15 win over Eastside to move into the championship game.
Awaiting the Lady Broncos was the Dibrell Lady Wildcats, who had a first-round bye and beat Irving College 24-23 in the semifinals.
Dibrell tried its best to slow down the Lady Broncos, but Pistole and Hoover each scored seven points in the opening period to give Boyd a 14-6 advantage.
Bain began asserting her will in the second quarter for Boyd. Bain was a nightmare for the Lady Wildcats in the paint as she hit two layups on offense, then denied three Dibrell shots on the other end. Behind Bain’s two buckets, Boyd went to halftime leading 18-9.
Hoover quickly made it a double-digit advantage when the second half started. Right after the whistle blew, Boyd’s point guard brought the ball up court and launched a 3-pointer from the top of the key.
The shot hit nothing but net and Boyd never slowed down.
Hoover would sink another 3-pointer in the period and Bain added two more layups while Dibrell countered with three free throws from Bailey Barrett and a basket by Allie Winkler.
Boyd was doubling up Dibrell 28-14 when the fourth quarter started, but the lead would continue to swell in the final six minutes.
Pistole closed the game with five points in the fourth period, while Ashley Kiefer got into the scoring column with two jumpers. Morgan Deweese and Emma Rhoton also connected for Boyd in the final period as the Lady Broncos won their third straight game by 20 or more points.
Hoover led the Lady Broncos with 14 points, followed by Pistole with 12. Bain added eight while Kiefer had four. Deweese and Rhoton tallied two points apiece.
Barrett, Sianna Womack and Erin Cantrell had four points each for Dibrell to lead the way. Winkler and Jalynn Davis scored two points apiece.
The 7-8 grade season is set to begin Thursday, Nov. 29.
