Baby steps are what the Broncos are taking as they work to rebuild their program. Boyd, which is still breaking in several young players and coming off a one-win season, wasn’t able to get its first win Monday, but the Broncos battled to the end against Watertown.
The Purple Tigers were able to walk away with a 63-46 victory at JK Stanley Gymnasium, but not before taking the Broncos’ best shot. Boyd, which had allowed 90-plus points in each of its last three losses, got a huge night from senior Jordan Perry as he scored 21 points. Watertown countered with a 37-point explosion form JJ Goodall, 24 coming after the break when the Purple Tigers turned a 32-28 battle into a comfortable win.
Perry did the majority of his damage in the first half, racking up 19 points by halftime. The senior was lethal off the bounce, regularly getting all the way to the rim and finishing over 2-3 defenders with an array of twisting and spinning shots.
Watertown was able to slow the senior after the break and the Boyd offense couldn’t keep up without Perry’s production. Boyd scored just 18 points after halftime, getting five late points from freshman Jordin Mitchell, a triple from senior Dylan Vandeveer and three quick points from Jaxon Grissom early in the third as second-half highlights.
Boyd dropped to 0-5 after Monday’s home debut. The Broncos were in action Tuesday against the Cannon County Lions, but the results were unavailable at press time. See Friday’s edition for more on Bronco basketball.
