Allison Cripps works on drills Thursday as the WCHS Lady Pioneers get ready for season play.
On the downhill side of summer break, the fall and winter sports teams are back at it.After the required TSSAA dead period, the gridiron and the hardwood athletes are busy again as the Pioneer football team, basketball teams, cross country and girls soccer teams went back in action preparing for the start of another season. With the first day of school Aug. 10, the first Pioneer football game is one week, and one day later as the Pioneers play host to neighboring DeKalb County on Friday, Aug. 18, beginning at 7 p.m.Prior to facing DeKalb County, the Pioneers will have two scrimmages under their belt with one in Tullahoma on Friday, Aug. 4 and one at home Aug. 11.Working on their spread offense and screen passes Thursday, the Pioneers plan on passing more this season, challenging senior quarterback Isaiah Grayson. Picking up freshman players from advancing members of the WCMS football CTC Championship Pioneers, WCHS will definitely be fleet of foot come game day.The Pioneers new air approach will take advantage of their speed, as they rebuild a running game that saw the loss of Raleigh Woods, first to injury and then as a graduating senior. After Woods' injury last year, Grayson took the lead in running yards for the team. Going to the air this year will give the team a chance to open up the field on the ground.
