When it’s cold outside and school’s closed, you can still find dedicated county basketball players warming up at McMinnville Civic Center.
Take Lacedrick Cox, who plays for the freshman Pioneers at Warren County High School. He was busy with his baseline jumpers Monday afternoon.
Cox was joined by Cameron Jones, John Yeargin, Tyler Pomales, Blake Driver and Josh Argo for some impromptu basketball action. Not too crowded, the gym had lots of space for students who wanted some more practice time.
Other local residents just wanted to get out of the cold to walk or play tennis or use the many workout bikes and machines available at the Civic Center.
Along with the opportunity to play basketball when no other outlet was available, the Civic Center has been finishing up its organization of both tennis and indoor soccer leagues.
“We’re just starting our tennis league play,” said Justin Scott, assistant director of Parks and Recreation. “We had some folks practicing Thursday but we’ll begin in earnest on Saturday. We’ve got 19 teams total and four divisions of soccer players so it’s been a successful sign-up phase.”
McMinnville Civic Center is open to the public for a fee, and family memberships are available at weekly, monthly or yearly rates.
You can buy a day pass for $5 for adults or $3 for children but if you’re planning on using the facility regularly, a monthly, 6-month or yearly membership is more cost-friendly. Family memberships start at $40 a month, individuals pay $30.
The most cost economical is a yearly membership with a family membership being $360, which comes out to $7.50 a month per person for a family of four. The average cost for gym memberships across the country is $40-$50 a month, according to CNBC statistics, which makes McMinnville Civic Center a viable and affordable option.
The facility is open Monday-Thursday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
You can even book special events like birthday parties, family reunions and other group activities.
