With one mighty swing, Maddie Bryant knocked out the lights and Family Care Clinic's chances of a title in the girls 10-14 senior league.
Bryant's mammoth inside-the-park home run, immediately greeted with half the lights going off at Pete Holt Field, highlighted a 15-6 championship game win by Zaxby's Thursday night. It capped a memorable run for the tournament No. 3 seed as they pulled off an upset in the semifinals and ended a Cinderella run in the championship game.
Family Care Clinic made the finals by beating top seed Generations 13-10 Thursday, but they didn't have a lot in the tank left when Zaxby's starting bashing the ball. Bryant was the ring leader in blowout, roping a pair of doubles and the backbreaking inside-the-parker which one-hopped to the 216-foot fence at Pete Holt Field.
Bryant's two-run shot put her team up for the first time, 7-6, and was the last play on the league's usual field. The game had to be moved over to Jim Mansfield Field when the lights didn't come back on, but the temporary shutdown didn't do anything to slow down Zaxby's.
Lyv Wilson and Jatavia Matlock singled and scored in the third to make it 9-6, then Emalyn Hutchins singled and scored on Bryant's double in the fourth to make it a four-run game.
By the time Serenity Martin knocked in two with a double in the fifth and Cali Prater singled and scored, the game was called due to the mercy rule.
Madison Moore was also a huge catalyst for Zaxby's, going 3-for-3 with two-run, inside-the-park homer of her own in the first innings. June Cossitt, Mackenna Weir and Cali Prater also had hits for the tournament champs.
Zoi Radny did her best to power Family Care Clinic, finishing 2-for-2 with a two-run inside-the-park homer that gave her team a 6-3 lead in the second. Anniston Page added three hits, while Averlie Mullins and Allie Easton each got hits and scored for FCC as well.
