Lady Broncos hounding opponents

Lady Broncos Laney Copeland, left, and Sara Kate Brogden trap Richard Hardy guard Abbie Gribble at halfcourt during Monday night’s game.

A popular story this time of year is “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”

Boyd has its own version of that tale, “How the Lady Broncos Stole the Basketball.”

Boyd’s defense was all over Richard Hardy on Monday night, creating turnovers that led to easy points, as the Lady Broncos cruised to an 84-29 win in McMinnville.

The victory keeps Boyd undefeated at 13-0 in high school action.

Monday night’s 55-point margin of victory has become the norm for the Lady Broncos. Their closest game this season has been 19 points, and they won one game by 85 points.

Boyd point guard Laney Copeland was the game-high scorer with 21. She scored driving to the hoop, drained a 3-pointer, and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line.

Anna Jones finished with 14 points for Boyd and showed her range by drifting from her usual spot in the post to knock down a pair of 3-pointers. Lia Wright provided Boyd with lockdown defense at the top of the key and was one of the fastest players up and down the court in scoring 14.

Richard Hardy, a small public school in South Pittsburgh, only had one player score in double digits. Kaidyn Johnson hit four 3-pointers and finished with 13.

In keeping with the holiday spirit, Boyd’s defense hit the Lady Hawks like a runaway sleigh. Boyd’s backcourt pressure was a constant challenge for Richard Hardy to navigate and the Lady Broncos also did some trapping in their half-court set.

The result was a parade of turnovers that doomed Richard Hardy’s chances.

On one play midway through the second quarter, Lia Wright converged on a Lady Hawk player and effortlessly snatched the ball away mid-dribble. Wright raced in for an uncontested layup that put Boyd ahead 40-9.

Richard Hardy hit three 3-pointers before the half for its best offensive sequence of the game. Boyd was up at halftime 52-20.

Any thoughts there might be a second-half comeback for Richard Hardy (3-2) were thrown on the rocks when Boyd outscored the Lady Hawks 25-4 in the third quarter.

During one offensive flurry, Boyd’s Audrey Durham took a shot to the head while driving to the rim, but still managed to make the basket, and her ensuring free throw, for a 3-point play.

Anna Jones followed by overpowering her defender for a short bucket in the post. Durham then made another steal and drove to the hoop, this time not getting fouled as she made a breakaway layup, 71-24.
