Well after just a few short months I have arrived. Well, I have always been somewhere but in the short time I have been here at the Southern Standard I have worked relentlessly to bring Warren County sports to the masses.
In case you didn’t notice yours truly made Employee of the Month for the month of April. Now, now, I already know what some of you are thinking. Wow, is the Southern Standard really that short-handed and my answer would be probably not.
But nevertheless I am very happy and appreciative to Southern Standard editor James Clark for taking a chance on me. I was self-employed several years and a running joke with my wife and several close friends was “I was voted employee of the month, every single month, for a solid year.” My company picnic usually included two people, five if our kids showed up.
But anyways enough of that. A sport I have really taken a liking to would have to be Lady Pioneer softball. The high school and middle school teams are really exciting to watch and there is a lot of fight in those girls. Gooby Martin is going to have his hands full when these middle school girls move up to the high school level. Many of these girls play softball during the week and make the jump to AAU basketball on the weekend. Again I salute the parents of these girls for keeping up with such a hectic schedule and getting them where they need to be.
Warren County Pioneer baseball is growing on me as well. Most of their games have been on the road thus far, but for the 14 games left this season, eight of those will be at home. And like its softball counterpart, Warren County Middle School is loaded with talent on the baseball diamond as well. It sure will make for some exciting games in the future for Warren County.
As for soccer, well it is a work in progress. I have spoken to WCMS coach Matt Jackson and told him I would try my best but soccer may be a sport where I have the least amount of knowledge. One thing is for sure, I am not afraid to ask questions and coach Jackson has been more than helpful in getting me the answers.
For me tennis just doesn’t last long enough. We need a longer tennis season. We are huge tennis fans at my house, so much so we attended a Night at the Net event in Nashville with such tennis players as Andy Roddick and the Bryan brothers who have made quite the names for themselves in doubles tennis.
So there is a little more about me maybe you did not know, and perhaps you did not want to know. But hey, I am just going with the flow. Hopefully I’ll be around covering sports for a while, as for now I have my sights set on Employee of the Year. Right on.
