Random Thoughts -Wrestling tourney exciting

No. 1 The TSSAA Region 5 Wrestling Tournament at Warren County this past weekend was most impressive. I am not sure I have ever witnessed a three-ring circus event, but with all three mats on the gym floor going at the same time, it was an exciting event.

A lot of parents and wrestling teams brought a lot of action into the Dalt. Congratulations to Pioneer head wrestling coach Matt Turner for a program-best finish in the region and for organizing such a professional tournament.

No. 2 Luke Cameron has managed to make it into every section of the Southern Standard in the past couple of months except the Business Section. I expect to see a Luke Cameron column in that section soon.

No. 3 Cameron’s recent praise of WCHS Pioneer basketball coach Chris Sullens was a good harbinger to Sullens winning the 6-AAA District Coach of the Year award. The team tied for the regular season district title with White County and earned the No. 1 seed for the district tournament.

The Lady Pioneer basketball team finished the regular season 11-11 and demonstrated remarkable improvement from last season. Coach Anthony Lippe deserves a lot of praise as well as coach Sullens.

No. 4 Inclement weather has postponed the TSSAA State Wrestling Tournament for a week. Weather has also played havoc on the district basketball schedule. After COVID shutdowns, the weather delays are even more painful. Follow the Standard on Facebook and Twitter for timely updates.

No. 5 Interviewing Erica Cantrell made me reminisce about my grandmother and her stories about “sparking” in her youth. For you young people out there, sparking was a term in the old days for dating.

There may be nothing I miss more than being in my grandmother’s presence, hearing her talk about the family and friends. My grandmother’s stories about her dates with my grandfather were always interesting. FYI – her dates always involved another couple or chaperones.

No. 6 Another thing I miss are albums. I miss the excitement of getting the album, reading all the liner notes, and listening to it. Albums used to reflect and affect the culture, but that influence is blowing in the wind these days. I would think a hit album would be a smash during a pandemic. Streaming is the main source of music, but you can still stream an album! I might as well be hoping for a $5 Roma pizza! Hahaha!

No. 7 Believe it or not, according to my Google machine, there are 15 states and districts which have officially moved football into late winter/ spring in 2021. Get ready for more football.
