Livin' la Vida Lacy - Seeking just the right mattress
IMG_6117 2.jpg

Sleep is important. Everyone knows that so I won’t bore you with the details on how sleep deprivation can mess you up emotionally and physically. You know what can contribute to a great night’s sleep – a new mattress. That’s what we’re looking for, but how do you pick the perfect mattress?

The one we’ve been sleeping on is too firm even with an eggshell foam topper. I’ve read mattresses that are too firm can push on your main pressure points and take you out of alignment. Sounds about right. Ross and I both are beginning to feel it in our lower backs. However, if it’s too soft, your body won’t be properly supported so that’s no good either. Like Goldilocks, I need to find the one that’s just right.

Considering we have a king size bed and that a mattress typically costs around a grand, you better believe I’m researching and asking around. Even though our interior renovations are complete, we’re still living upstairs because, well, we’ve not had time to mattress hunt.

With hundreds of manufacturers and countless material configurations, it can be overwhelming. I read one guide that broke down the materials including interspring, memory foam, gel, latex, hybrid and pillowtop. I didn’t realize there were so many choices.

So, here’s what I’ve gathered so far from research and verbal feedback from friends and fam.

• Original Purple mattress – Oddly enough, this one was the most recommended by friends and family. Warranty/Guarantee: 100 Night Trial, 10-year-warranty

Firmness: Medium

• Casper Wave Mattress – I have occasionally seen this one pop up in commercials. Unfortunately, I don’t know anyone with this mattress so I’ve just read reviews online.

Warranty/Guarantee: 100-night trial, 10-year limited warranty

Firmness: Firm to Medium-Firm

• Simmons BeautyRest Mattress – I believe this is one of the brands that dominates the hotel industry.

Warranty/Guarantee: Varies by retailer, 10-year limited warranty

Firmness: Two comfort levels, one soft, the other medium firm

These are just the top three that I’ve looked at, but I’m still not sure. These brands that come in a box freak me out. I’ve never bought one that way and I’m used to occasionally flipping my mattress. I’m also old school and want to test it out and feel it before making a purchase.

I typically don’t ask for recommendations. I’m not one to even post on Facebook for inquires, but I’m getting desperate, y’all. I need to create a sleep-through-your-alarm bedroom, especially after nearly two years of sleeping uncomfortably upstairs.

Right now, I’ve got new sheets washed and ready along with a soft, textured Matelasse coverlet with a classic cable pattern from L.L. Bean. The room is waiting for us to inhabit it. Our bedroom set is arranged and the drawers have been reorganized. All we need is a new mattress.

So, if you’ve got a mattress that helps you sleep like royalty, email me all the details at news@southernstandard.com.
