Livin' la Vida Lacy - Discovering old treasures

Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and stop procrastinating. Here lately, I’ve been piddling outside painting wrought iron furniture and refilling the cracks between our outdoor stone flooring with sand.

The deck has recently been restained and the shop has new insulation. Oh, and Ross even fixed our fountain so the relaxing gurgle of water is back.

I always have a home project going, but I’m not run nearly as ragged as last year. Now, I take time to enjoy our home and if I’m not feeling up to a task, I remind myself that whatever it is can wait for another day. Well, after delaying for months, I finally decided to go through and reorganize my jewelry box.

I knew it would be a time-consuming task. The move jarred earrings and bracelets so everything was completely topsy-turvy. A lot of it needed cleaning. I spread a towel on the floor and began sorting. I’d forgotten how many special pieces I have in my collection.

Over the past couple of years, I’ve become more minimalistic wearing the same earrings and ring each day. Actually, I stopped wearing much jewelry at all. I don’t have time to detangle my camera strap from a necklace on my way out the door. I also tend to dress more casually these days too. One of the perks of being a reporter.

Anyway, what I didn’t expect was a trip down memory lane. Beaded jewelry with shells from Seaside reminded me of teen trips to the beach with my bestie. I found some long dangly rhinestone earrings along with some other bling from my pageant days. Then, there was a box of random rings my sister and I used to share in our adolescence.

After sitting on my floor touching each piece and going through the little boxes, I decided I shouldn’t hold on to what I knew I wouldn’t wear. I’ve gotten better at letting go of stuff. Even the most sentimental of things have their time and purpose. Then, you release them to new homes and owners.

Like my makeup bag, my jewelry box is a hodge podge of items. My favorite jewelry brands are Brighton and Waxing Poetic, primarily because these lines mix metals. I like being able to wear both silver and gold together. TJ Maxx is another place I’ve found some unique rings and earrings for cheap.

As for everyday wear, I’m a stud earrings girl all the way. They’re light and you don’t have to worry about your friend’s toddler ripping them out. I also like rings and bracelets, but you’ll seldom see me in a necklace. Every now and again, I’ll wear my long Waxing Poetic chain with my tree charm, but only because it’s really lightweight.

So, I’ve boxed and bagged up what I’m not keeping to pass along to Grandma. I’ll let her and others in my family look through it to see if anything strikes their fancy. Now I just need my polishing cloth and, voilà, my old jewelry will be good as new!
