South viewed unfairly in context of history

To the Editor:The recent request to fly a Confederate flag at the courthouse has received criticism from various individuals. The Confederacy did not have to fight the war in order to preserve slavery. As sad as it sounds, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1857 in what is known as the Dred Scott Decision that slavery was protected by the Constitution.
