Veston Herman Gillis, 83, of Decaturville died Feb. 1 at Decatur County General Hospital.
He was born Sept. 20, 1930 in Broxton, Ga., to the late Herman and Pauline Solomon Gillis. He was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Vernon (Bo) Eugene and Dorothy Jean Van Hooser Gillis; sister and brother-in-law, Virginia Pauline Gillis and Raymond O. Stiles Jr.; and mother of his children, Jo Ann Hendrixson Gillis Bishop.
He was a retired auto parts manager in Murfreesboro and retired from the Tennessee Army National Guard with the rank of major. He faithfully served for 26 years. He was a football player with the Central High Bulldogs and graduated from Central in 1949.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Crosslie (Satterfield) Gillis; four daughters, Vesta Ann (Jack) Lancaster of Killen, Ala., Alicia Alexander of Corinth, Ms., Michelle Todd of Corinth, Gale (Fred) Alexander of Decaturville; and son, Harold (Janet) Satterfield of Decaturville; several grandchildren, including Shelley Alexander and John Satterfield of Decaturville and several great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Feb. 3 at Decaturville Cemetery with Rev. Steven Douglas officiating.
