Mr. Thurman Leard Hitchcock was born Feb. 8, 1921 in Van Buren County. He passed from this mortal existence Aug. 26. He was 98 years of age.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather he was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, a farmer, and a member of the American Legion. He served under Gen. George Patton in the U. S. Army during World War II, was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge, and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Mr. Hitchcock was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 70 years Emma Jewel Grissom Hitchcock, parents Morris Sampson and Mary Leona Jaco Hitchcock, and siblings Shirley Hitchcock Brady, Leffie Hitchcock, Flavis Hitchcock, Liston Hitchcock, and Grace Hitchcock Drake.
Survivors include his children Thurman Mark Hitchcock, Miriam Elaine (Cordell) Crawford, Merrill Timothy (Billye) Hitchcock, and Margaret Suzanne (Gordon R.) Moore, brothers Gerald (Mary) Hitchcock, Morris Sherrill (Jean) Hitchcock, sister-in-law Kathleen Moffitt Hitchcock, grandchildren Trent (Amber) Hitchcock, Brian Hitchcock, Jenny (Ken) Nafrada, Mary Beth (Jake) Millard, Andrew Crawford, Bonnie (Aaron) Higley, Emily (Chad) Graves, Kelly (Sean) Dennis, Megan (Chris) Burt, Meleah (Jamie) Pitts, Haley (Aaron) Hale, Daniel Hitchcock, Sampson (Brittany) Hitchcock, Russell (Cassidy) Hitchcock, Katherine Hitchcock, Richard (Sarah) Moore, Laura (Jason) Judd, Julia (Sloan) Rehder, Michelle (Samuel) Rodgers, 45 great-grandchildren and three on the way.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Adrian Hale will officiate. Interment will follow at Long Cemetery in Van Buren County. Military grave rites will be administered by the Van Buren County American Legion Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the parlors of McMinnville Funeral Home.
