McMinnville resident and DeKalb County native Laura Louise Maggart Burton Buck, 93, was born June 8, 1929 and died Jan. 25, 2023 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center in Cookeville following an extended illness.           

Louise was a retired switch board operator with Powermatic and a longtime member of Liberty Cumberland Presbyterian Church where she was also the organist. She served decades in The Lions Club, but she was most known for her love of animals. She was the daughter of the late Robert P. and Mattie B. Dyer Maggart.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Frank Maggart and Bob Maggart; sister, Mary Clemons; and first husband, Walter Whitson “Snuffy” Burton, Jr.

She was married to Col. Robert Buck of McMinnville on March 10, 2010. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Buck is survived by son, Scott Burton of Dallas; daughter, Shannon Byrd of McMinnville; best nephew and niece, James and Evon Maggart of Cookeville; grandsons, Lance and Logan Byrd and many other special relatives.

Graveside service and interment will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28 at Mt. View Cemetery in McMinnville with Larry Green officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at High’s.  

She never really cared for flowers so in lieu of flowers, please donate to the ASPCA, the Humane Society, the local animal shelter or just pick up a stray, take it home and love it.
