James Kenneth Cantrell was born Aug. 2, 1939 and died Oct. 28 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clinton and Clora Cantrell and is survived by his wife, Laine Bratcher Cantrell; daughters, Samantha E. Cantrell and Amanda Cantrell Roche (spouse, Thomas Roche); grandchildren, Ella and John Roche; siblings, Douglas Cantrell and Kay Durham (spouse, Aaron Durham); mother-in-law, Velma Bratcher; brother-in-law, Thomas Bratcher (spouse, Peggy Bratcher); as well as devoted nieces and nephews.
After graduating from high school, he served in the U.S. Army for three years before earning his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Middle Tennessee State University. He was a numbers man. For 30 years, he worked as an accountant for Genesco and later as a comptroller at Genesco’s Employees Credit Union. From 1974 onwards, he also spent countless, happy hours improving his house and his beloved woods, always finding ways to make a home for his family that was more comfortable and unique.
Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Nov. 5 at Jennings and Ayers Funeral Home in Murfreesboro, to be followed by a memorial at 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society (designation: cancer research) or to Alive Hospice.
