James F. McDonough, retired architect, died March 6, at the age of 76. 

Jim was born and grew up in McMinnville, the son of a lawyer and a teacher. He attended Clemson University and received the bachelor of architecture degree from the University of Tennessee.

He served as Assistant to the Director of Facilities Planning at UT before starting his residential design and construction company, Jim McDonough, Inc., which specialized in renovation.

He gave generously of his time, knowledge, and enthusiasm to charitable organizations, including the Knoxville Botanical Garden and Arboretum, of which he was co-founder, the Community School of the Arts, where he initiated and worked with the Side-by-Side Visual Arts Apprentice Program, and the Aslan Foundation, where he helped shepherd the purchase of Loghaven and its rebirth as an artist residency, among many other projects.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, William Grady McDonough and Frances Swenson McDonough, and by his brother, William Grady McDonough Jr. He is survived by his wife Lindsay and his children Katherine and William, in whom he found so much joy.

Due to the pandemic, interment will be private.
