James E. Totherow Sr., 87

McMinnville resident and Sand Mountain, Ala., native James E. Totherow Sr., 87, died Oct. 9 at River Park Hospital after a brief illness.
A CPA with Totherow, Haile and Welch and a member of First Baptist Church, he served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the amphibious forces. He was a practicing CPA for over 50 years and a founding partner of Totherow, Haile and Welch. Along with his wife Ophelia, he was a longtime active member of First Baptist Church. He was also twice Commander of American Legion Post 173 and a member of VFW Post 5064.
The son of the late William Martin and Hattie Shrader Totherow, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ophelia Taylor Totherow.
He is survived by children and their spouses, Phyllis and Mike Turner, Betty Michalson, James and Denise Totherow Jr., all of McMinnville; six grandchildren, Bill Bates, Mike Vinson, Mark Wright, Lala Garcia, Jamie Lorance, and James E. Totherow III, all of McMinnville; nine great-grandchildren, and brother, Charles Totherow of Gruetli-Laager.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church with John May officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. View Cemetery with military grave rites administered by VFW Post 5064 and American Legion Post 173. Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday at High’s, and 11 a.m. until time of service Friday at the church.
