Fred Wayne Hillis, 80, a Rock Island resident and Warren County native, was born June 18, 1940 and passed Sept. 23 at St. Thomas Midtown in Nashville following an extended illness.
He was retired from Tennessee Metal Fabricating Corporation and Dunlap Construction, a member of Pleasant Cove Church of Christ where he served as elder, a lifetime member and former Chief of the Warren County Rescue Squad, and a member of Fairview Jammers.
Mr. Hillis was the son of the late James Lee “Dock” and Hazel Dodson Hillis. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by daughter Tresa Green, sisters Lucille Hillis and Joyce Hillis, and brothers, J.L. Hillis and Charlie Hillis.
He was married June 16, 1962 to Sharon Kaye Townsend Hillis. In addition to his wife, he is survived by son and daughter-in-law Gary and Lisa Hillis of Rock Island, daughter Lesa Fay Smith of Rock Island, five grandchildren Brandon Hillis of Rock Island, Sam Hillis of Shelbyville, Kaenah Smith of Cookeville, Zachary Green of Savannah, and Kevin and Terri Green of California, two great-grandsons Avery and Hunter Green, and brother, R.C. “Jot” Hillis of Rock Island. Several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Alzheimers of Cookeville, 1459 Interstate Drive, Cookeville, TN 38501, Pleasant Cove Church of Christ, or Smyrna Cemetery Fund.
A graveside service and interment will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Rock Island with Bro. Ray Weddington officiating. Family and friends are to meet at cemetery. Online condolences may be made at www.highfuneralhome.com.
