Dr. Joe D. Gray, 84, died Sunday, Dec. 27 at Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville.
He was born in Old Hickory on July 26, 1931. He was the current minister at Altamont Church of Christ. He was a professor at David Lipscomb University and had taught at other institutions. He was the voice of the “Treasure of Truth” radio broadcast. He and his family were missionaries to New Zealand. In addition, he trained over 125 college students in Project Good News who served as missionaries in over 80 countries.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel Clifford and Bertie Mae Hagewood Gray; brother, Frank Clifford Gray; and daughter, Jane Lorraine Gray.
He is survived by his wife, Harriette Dickerson Gray; sons, Joseph (Dawn) Gray of Brentwood, Scott Gray, Townsend; daughter, Linda (Doug) Varnado of Hendersonville; sisters Lorraine Yearwood of Athens, Ga., Jane Hudson of Brentwood; grandchildren, Jody, Nicholas, Katelin, Paul, Landon, Christian, Elliott, Sara and Leah.
Funeral service was held Tuesday at Layne Funeral Home Chapel with John Payne officiating with burial following at Altamont Cemetery.
Layne Funeral Home of Altamont was in charge of arrangements.
