Charles Dorris Hughes, 83, a McMinnville resident and Cannon County native, was born April 5, 1937 and passed Oct. 16 at the Webb House in Smithville following an extended illness.

He was a Church of Christ minister, a retired optician, a Tennessee Army National Guard veteran, and the son of the late William Calvin and Angie Phillips Hughes.

Mr. Hughes was married Aug. 13, 1959 to Marva Jean Coppinger Hughes, who preceded him in death Aug. 14, 2016. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by brother W.C. Hughes and brothers-in-law Glenn Hobbs and William Grider.

He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Glenda Hughes of McMinnville, grandson Caleb Hughes of McMinnville, sister Janet Hobbs of McMinnville, brother and sister-in-law Donnie and Johnnie Hughes of McMinnville, sister-in-law Kay Grider of McMinnville, and brother-in-law Terry Coppinger of McMinnville. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to West Riverside Church of Christ or Tennessee Children’s Home, 804 Branham Hughes Circle, Spring Hill, TN 37174.

Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, at West Riverside Church of Christ with Tony Lawrence and Drew Milligan officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at West Riverside Church of Christ. Military graves rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post 173 Honor Guard.
