Bobby Jewell Simmons Sr. passed away Aug. 19 at the age of 72.
Bobby was born Oct. 19, 1949 in Campaign to Violet Louise Davis and Hershal Simmons. His father worked as an equipment operator, and his mother took care of the home and eight children. Growing up with his siblings Anthony “Tony” Simmons, Donnie Ray Simmons, Barbara Sue Cantrell, Edward Eugene Simmons, Kathy Lynn Bouldin, Linda McAdams, and Frances Nolan, Bobby spent over a year in the hospital as a young boy, with rheumatic fever. He always told the story that his brothers would come see him and tell him he was replaced by his new baby sister, Kathy. He graduated from Central High School in McMinnville.
Bobby met the love of his life, Sarah, when they were both teens. Sarah was visiting her grandmother in Tennessee and met Bobby for the first time. The two have been together ever since. They were married in Woodbury when Bobby was 19 and Sarah was 18, and were blessed with 53 years together. He was a proud father to his sons Bobby Jewel Simmons Jr. and Steve Simmons, and was so excited to welcome all his grandchildren and especially adding two granddaughters to their house full of boys. He always enjoyed spending time with his children and his grandkids.
Bobby was a truck driver. He worked for Weben and then drove for TXI for 30-plus years, from 1979 until he retired. In his free time, he enjoyed gardening, watching westerns, and drinking Budweiser. He loved his old Ford pickup. He liked neckbone soup and recently started to eat sunflower seeds.
Bobby was grumpy, stubborn, and hard-headed. After all, “he is a Simmons.” He was known to tell people, “If you don’t like it here you can leave.” His wife Sarah is a member of Hopewell Assembly Church of God. Even though he was not a member, he was special. The church came to him.
Bobby leaves behind his wife Sarah Jean Simmons, his son Bobby Jewel Simmons Jr. and his wife Crystal, his son Steve Simmons, his grandchildren Dylan, Tyler, Shane, Caitlyn, Cole, and Catherine; his great-grandchild Kolson and two others on the way Alani Grace and Harlow Jean; his brother Donnie Ray Simmons, his sister and brother-in-law Barbara and Bo Cantrell, his sister and brother-in-law Kathy and Gary Bouldin, his sister and brother-in-law Linda and Mac McAdams, his sister and brother-in-law Frances and Peter Nolan, his stepfather Thomas D. Owens, his in-laws Trisha Clark, Ruby Garcia, and Vickie Young, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is reunited with his parents, his brothers Tony and Edward Simmons and his sister Kathy, and his in-laws Bill Young, Arvin Blaylock, Linda Blaylock, Diane Ward, and Barbara Long.
Visitation was Tuesday at Corley Funeral Home. His funeral service will be Wednesday, Aug. 24, at 11 a.m. at Corley Funeral Home in Corsicana, Texas.
