A well-known established Smith County realtor and financier Mr. Bill Floyd of Carthage was pronounced deceased at 10:13 a.m. Sunday morning Oct. 24 at Riverview Regional Medical Center in Carthage after being found unresponsive by his daughter Sabra at Mr. Floyd’s Hull Avenue home. Mr. Floyd was 86.
Mr. Floyd was at the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home where his services were conducted on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 28. His brother-in-law, pastor Mike Cantrell, officiated at the 1 p.m. services and burial followed at Garden of Gethsemane at Smith County Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Floyd was born William Clarence Floyd in Manchester in Coffee County on Dec. 23, 1934 and was one of eight children of the late Cecil Britton Floyd, who died April 18, 1977 at the age of 67 and Tennie Mae McCormick Floyd who died Feb. 23, 2005 at the age of 90.
Mr. Floyd and his first wife Blanche Hillis Floyd, who died Dec. 6, 2020 at the age of 83, were preceded in death by their son, Kent Terrell Floyd, who died Dec. 8, 2000 at the age of 45 from injuries received from a single-car auto accident on Nov. 26, 1971.
Also preceding him in death were three siblings, Ray Floyd who died at the age of 27 on Dec. 11, 1964, Joann Floyd Powers who died at the age of 52 on Sept. 5, 1997, and Wayne Floyd who died at the age of 18 on Aug. 6, 1966.
Mr. Floyd was the owner of Floyd Realty in Carthage which he established in 1995.
His real estate career began in Carthage in 1980 when he and the late Dwinn Wright established the Carthage Real Estate Company. He was licensed by the state of Tennessee as a realtor in 1980.
Before entering the real estate profession, Mr. Floyd was maintenance supervisor at the Smithville, Carthage & Lafayette Post Offices. He retired from the General Services Administration in 1977. His family relocated to Carthage from McMinnville in 1959 when he received the position with the U.S. Postal Service so they could be centrally located between the three offices. He retired his real estate license in 2016 and began financing people to purchaser businesses, purchase properties, and made secured loans to individuals.
A shrewd businessman and financial wizard, he constructed over fifty homes in Smith and Putnam County. In his early career, he and Morris Myers constructed almost every home on the north side of Dixon Springs Highway from Smith County Motors to Massey Road.
Mr. Floyd graduated high school in 1952 in Warren County. He was of the Baptist faith.
His immediate survivors are two daughters, former Carthage Mayor Sabra Hodge and husband Dan of Carthage, Brittany Floyd Newport of Tompkinsville, Ky., three sisters, Jean Floyd Jones and husband Bill, Stella Floyd Starks and husband Wayne, all of Columbus, Ga., Brenda Floyd Cantrell and husband Mike, of Milan, Indiana; brother-in-law Vernon Powers and wife Milan of McMinnville, five grandchildren, Katelyn Hodge Woodard and husband Chris of Carthage, Tyler Hodge and wife Alissa of Columbus, Indiana, Hayden Newport, William Cade Newport, and Brynn Newport all of Tompkinsville, Kentucky; six great-grandchildren, Lucas, Calvin, Isabella and Roselynn Hodge, Marilyn and Colton Woodard. The Floyd family requests memorials be made to the Jordan Hackett Foundation.
Sanderson Funeral Home of Carthage was in charge of arrangements.
