Mrs. Barbara Mae Zsigalov Dolzonek was born on Nov. 21, 1940 and passed away peacefully on July 6, 2023 at her residence surrounded by her family following a brief illness. Mrs. Dolzonek was a Brooklyn, N.Y. native who called McMinnville home sine 1972. Mrs. Dolzonek is survived by her husband of 62 years, George; sister-in-law, Gay Zsigalov of Quebeck, Tenn.; four children, George A. Dolzonek of McMinnville, Gregory (Karen) Dolzonek of Tony, Ala., Linda (Mike) Trivett of McMinnville, and Kristine (Jason) Gross of McMinnville; six grandchildren, Zackary Dolzonek and his daughter, Georgia of McMinnville, Nathan Dolzonek of Huntsville, Ala., Allison Dolzonek of Seattle, Wa., Nicholas Dolzonek of Madison, Wi., Megan Kennedy of McMinnville and Alex Gross of Murfreesboro. Several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews also survive.
Barbara was preceded in death by her mother, Stephanie Zsigalov of McMinnville; her brother, Stephen Zsigalov of McMinnville; sister-in-law, Sophie Kalinowski of Brooklyn, N.Y., brother-in-law, Pete Dolzonek of Denver, Col., brother-in-law, Alex and wife Doris Dolzonek, both of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; and daughter-in-law, Lucretia Dolzonek of McMinnville.
Barbara began working on Wall Street in the garment district before marrying the love of her life, George H. Dolzonek, on Jan. 21, 1961. When the family moved to Tennessee, Barbara was a homemaker for many years. She began working outside the home in the late 1970’s as the first breakfast manager for Hardee’s in McMinnville. After working at Hardee’s, Barbara began working at the Southern Standard newspaper as the proof reader. Barbara soon moved to the advertising department of the Southern Standard, where she won awards for her creative advertisements. Barbara retired from the Southern Standard in 1996. During her many years of retirement, Barbara enjoyed traveling with her husband, was an avid reader, loved crossword puzzles and spending time with her family. Her love and knowledge of cooking and baking was enjoyed and inspired many people over the years. Her sense of humor, proficient vocabulary and sharp wittiness will be sorely missed.
Per Mrs. Dolzonek’s wishes, she will be cremated. There will be no visitation or service. The family will have a private gathering at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The American Heart Association, Tunnels to Towers Foundation, or the charity of your choice.
