Valentine’s Day is designated as the day of love around the country. Each year on Feb. 14 many people exchange cards, candy gifts or flowers for their special Valentine. The popular festival of love dates back to an ancient Roman festival surrounded by many legends and beliefs to glorify the feeling of love.
Southern Standard loves our customers and we enjoy showing our appreciation to them and the support from the community, hence our most recent customer appreciation day. Friday the doors were opened to welcome guests to the newspaper.
Recently honored as the Standard’s Cutest Couple, Clifford and Jean Reel, were recognized as honored guests. They have resided in the area a short time, and were very happy to receive the most votes.
“Our customers and advertisers make this day for us, and we are thankful for them,” said publisher Pat Zechman. “Our staff members work hard to be good hosts and hostesses, and put in many hours making it happen.”
Visitors could enjoy free hot dogs and drinks, and register for assorted door prizes. The grand prize package consisted of a dinner at Gondola, a box of chocolates and flowers.
They could also take advantage of a subscription special to ensure the delivery of the hometown newspaper, which is published three times a week. The publication receives awards annually by the Tennessee Press Association in various categories.
“I just love the Southern Standard and read every issue,” said Eunice Haley. “The front page is probably my favorite part of the paper, followed by the puzzle page.”
Pearl and Ben Herrin also participated in the appreciation day activities, enjoying hot dogs and visiting with folks. In fact, Ben pointed out it was also his birthday, and the hotdog just might be his birthday dinner.
“We sit down and read the newspaper, loving every bit of it,” said Pearl. “I guess I look at the obituarys first, and then the advertisements.”
Zechman continued to say, “We are happy to be committed to the community for over 135 years, informing the people, sharing their stories and documenting the history of the area.”
Kathy Milburn is the grand prize winner of the asorted gift packages. Lucky winners of tote bags are Carolyn Davis, Becky Maynard, Rodney Reynolds and Ron Conley.
