First-grade students in Meghan Pegram’s class at Centertown Elementary have specific ideas to what they want to be when they grow up -- firefighter, policeman, teacher, singer or nurse, just to name a few. Their wishes will all be documented in a professionally bound book featuring a paragraph written by each child, as well as artwork.

The project is part of Pegram’s plan to preserve a memory for her students to look back on, and to celebrate each child becoming a published author.

“This will be fun for them to recall when they get older, and it makes them feel special,” said Pegram. “I write a note to them in the book and add several photos.”

She uses Studentreasures Publishing, providing them with the essays and they make it into a high-quality, hard-cover book. For more than 20 years, the company has provided the free service to help create more than 14 million young authors.

“This company has been great to work with,” said Pegram. “They even helped me with proofreading and corrected mistakes they made, even letting me keep the books with errors.”

The 16 students have a variety of ideas of what they will do in the future. Tenlee Medley, Aubrey Alford and Layla Childress all want to become teachers.

“It’s good for kids to learn and to learn to read,” said Medley. “I want everyone to grow up to be happy.”

Lilly Fitts wants to be a singer and likes to listen to music on the radio, and George Mullican aspires to become a scientist because he likes science class so much.

Student Greyson Woodard says his dream job is to become a policeman, while Baylee Baxter hopes to become a policewoman so she can arrest people and put them in jail. Gage Sexton wants to be an officer on the SWAT team, and Braden Fann wants to be a firefighter and help others.

Adaline Beaty, Ansley Pepper and Kloey Adams hope to join the medical profession, becoming a nurse or a doctor. Student Kinsley Jones wants to be a caregiver, but for animals, as she wants to be a vet.

Hayden Lawrence had one of the most unique dreams, that of wanting to be a Power Ranger.
